Minecraft Java Snapshot 26w04a: What's New and What It Means for Your Kingdom

What Changed

On 13 October 2026, Mojang pushed snapshot 26.4-snapshot-4, the fourth test build in the 26.4 development cycle for Minecraft: Java Edition. This snapshot is part of Mojang's year-based versioning system (introduced with the 26.x generation), where version numbers reflect the year and week of release rather than a traditional game-version number like 1.22.

A dedicated changelog article for this specific build has not yet been published by Mojang, which is fairly typical for mid-cycle snapshots. Based on its place in the sequence, this build is most likely focused on incremental bug fixes, stability improvements, and refinements to features already introduced earlier in the 26.4 series. We'll update this post the moment a full changelog lands.

Why It Matters

Snapshots are Mojang's way of inviting the community to test upcoming features before they go live in a full release. Playing one gives you an early look at what's coming, but it comes with trade-offs:

The 26.x versioning generation itself is also significant, it marks Mojang's structural shift away from the classic 1.x numbering that players have known for over a decade.

Java and Bedrock

This snapshot is Java Edition only. Bedrock Edition (the version used on consoles, mobile, and Windows via the Microsoft Store) follows a completely separate release track and is not affected by this snapshot. Bedrock players will continue on their current stable version until Mojang announces a Bedrock update independently. If you play cross-platform with friends, nothing changes on the Bedrock side today.

For Server Owners

If you run your own Java server, here are the key things to keep in mind:

For Parents

Your child may come home excited about this snapshot, and that enthusiasm is wonderful! Here's the plain-language version:

For Players

Hey players, yes, you can try this snapshot, and it might be fun to poke around in! But here's what to know first:

Do SNT Kingdoms Need an Update?

No update is needed, or possible, right now. SNT Gaming kingdoms run Paper 1.21.11 backends behind a Velocity proxy, with ViaVersion, ViaBackwards, and ViaRewind handling client compatibility from version 1.13 all the way up to 1.21.11. Bedrock players join seamlessly via Geyser and Floodgate.

The 26.x snapshot series uses Mojang's new year-based version format, and the critical tools that power SNT kingdoms, PaperMC, Velocity, and the Via family, have not yet released builds compatible with 26.x clients. That means 26.x client profiles cannot connect to kingdoms at this time, and we won't attempt to migrate until the full ecosystem catches up to ensure a stable, safe experience for every player.

All six worlds in your kingdom, Survival, SharedLife, RandomLoot, Chaos, Spleef, and Rivals, are running smoothly on the current stable stack. We're watching the PaperMC and Velocity roadmaps closely and will keep you posted right here when a supported upgrade path opens up.
