Minecraft Java Snapshot 26.4-3: What It Means for Your Kingdom
What Changed
On 6 October 2026, Mojang pushed Java Edition snapshot 26.4-snapshot-3 to the official version manifest. This is the third snapshot in the 26.4 development cycle, part of Mojang's newer year-based versioning scheme (replacing the old week-code format like "23w45a").
Because this release arrived as a version manifest entry rather than an accompanied changelog article, the exact list of tweaks, fixes, and experiments inside it is not yet public. Mojang typically follows up with a dedicated blog post within a day or two, so watch this space for a deeper breakdown once that detail lands.
Why It Matters
Even without a full changelog, snapshot releases matter for a few key reasons:
- They signal momentum. A third snapshot in the 26.4 cycle means Mojang is actively iterating, a stable 26.4 release is getting closer.
- They set the compatibility clock ticking. Every new snapshot is a version that players might try to connect with, which can cause confusion when servers haven't caught up yet.
- They may carry experimental features that eventually graduate into full releases, shaping the game your kids will be playing months from now.
Java and Bedrock
This snapshot is Java Edition only. Bedrock Edition follows its own release cadence and is not affected by this particular drop. If your household mixes Java and Bedrock players, common in families where some kids play on PC and others on tablet or console, nothing changes on the Bedrock side today.
It's also worth noting that the 26.x year-based versioning is exclusive to Java Edition for now. Bedrock continues to use its own numbered scheme (e.g., 1.21.x), so the two editions remain on separate tracks.
For Server Owners
If you run your own server infrastructure, here are the practical points:
- Do not update your production server to this snapshot. Snapshots are experimental by definition and can break worlds, plugins, and mods without warning.
- PaperMC, Velocity, and the Via family (ViaVersion, ViaBackwards, ViaRewind) have not yet migrated to Mojang's year-based 26.x versioning. That means proxy and plugin support for 26.x clients is genuinely unavailable in the wider ecosystem, not just an SNT issue.
- Keep an eye on the PaperMC and ViaVersion GitHub repositories for migration announcements. When those projects ship 26.x support, the path to upgrading becomes much clearer.
For Parents
Your child may see "26.4-snapshot-3" appear in their Minecraft launcher and want to try it immediately, that's completely normal Minecraft-kid behaviour! A few things worth knowing:
- Snapshots are unfinished software. They can crash, corrupt save files, or behave unexpectedly. It's fine to explore them in a separate, throwaway world, but not on anything precious.
- If your child switches their launcher profile to this snapshot, they will not be able to join the family's SNT kingdom until they switch back to a supported version (1.13–1.21.11). Show them how to switch profiles before they try, it saves tears later.
- Curiosity about snapshots is actually a great sign. Kids who follow development builds often grow into thoughtful, technically-minded gamers. Encourage it, just with a backup first!
For Players
Hey explorers! Here's the quick version:
- A new snapshot dropped, that means Mojang's team is busy cooking up the next big update.
- You can download it from the launcher by turning on "Snapshots" in the installation settings. Just make a separate installation so you don't mess up your normal game profile.
- If you load it and then try to hop on your SNT kingdom, it won't work, your kingdom is on a different version right now. Just switch your launcher back to 1.21.11 and you'll be in like normal.
- Once a full changelog appears, we'll post a breakdown of all the cool new stuff. Stay tuned!
Do SNT Kingdoms Need an Update?
No action needed, and no update is possible yet. SNT Gaming kingdoms run Paper 1.21.11 backends behind a Velocity proxy, with ViaVersion / ViaBackwards / ViaRewind handling client compatibility from version 1.13 all the way up to 1.21.11. A dedicated Fabric 1.21.4 backend powers the custom SharedLife mode, and Geyser + Floodgate keeps the door open for Bedrock crossplay players.
The critical blocker is simple: PaperMC, Velocity, and the Via suite have not yet released builds that support Mojang's 26.x year-based versioning. Until those core projects ship compatible versions, there is no safe or stable upgrade path to 26.x for any kingdom, ours included.
The good news is that your kingdom works perfectly for every player using any client from 1.13 through 1.21.11, across all six worlds: Survival, SharedLife, RandomLoot, Chaos, Spleef, and Rivals. Nothing about today's snapshot changes that. We're monitoring upstream projects closely, and we'll announce a migration plan as soon as the ecosystem is ready.
