Minecraft Java 26.4 Snapshot 3: Ice Caves, Frostbite Mob & Friends Overhaul
What Changed
Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 3 is the first public taste of Mojang's winter game drop, unveiled at Minecraft LIVE. It's a meaty snapshot packed with brand-new content and quality-of-life improvements across two fronts: a frozen underground biome with all its inhabitants, and a thorough redesign of the multiplayer social features.
Ice Caves Biome
A new underground biome, the Ice Cave, can now generate beneath colder Overworld biomes. Its floors and ceilings are built from Packed Ice and Calcite, lit by glowing patches of Ice Crystals (a new amethyst-style block that emits light and can be placed in any direction). Icicles drape from the ceiling and jut up from the ground like pointed dripstone; they can grow up to five blocks long in the dark, break in bright light or the Nether, and deal extra falling damage to anyone unlucky enough to stand beneath them.
The Frostbite Mob
Meet the Frostbite, a zombie variant built for the cold. It switches between clawing at you in melee range (applying the new Freezing effect) and lobbing Ice Balls from a distance. It can stand on Powder Snow, is completely immune to freezing, and turns back into a regular Zombie if it spends too long underwater. Regular Zombies and Husks will transform into Frostbites when they wander into Powder Snow, so expect your existing mob farms to get a frosty surprise.
Freezing Mob Effect
The new Freezing effect makes affected players shake and gradually take damage, mimicking prolonged Powder Snow exposure. Leather Armor still reduces the damage it deals, though it won't stop the effect from being applied in the first place. Players can now brew Potions, Splash Potions, and Lingering Potions of Freezing using Ice Balls, and craft Arrows of Freezing by surrounding a Lingering Potion with eight arrows.
Friends & Social Overhaul
The Friends list has been rebuilt from the ground up with search and sorting options (online-first or alphabetical). The old Social Interactions screen is replaced by the new Other Players screen (default key: P), which lists everyone currently in your world plus recent chat participants. Per-player actions, muting, reporting, friend requests, are now consolidated into a single Player Options screen accessible from both menus.
Why It Matters
Ice Caves give explorers a completely new underground destination with its own atmosphere, loot pockets, and dangers. The Frostbite's dual-attack pattern makes it genuinely tricky to handle at any range, and Freezing potions add a new category of crowd-control brewing. Meanwhile, the Friends and Other Players overhaul makes multiplayer moderation significantly more parent-friendly, reporting, muting, and blocking are now far easier to find and use.
Java and Bedrock
This snapshot is Java Edition only. Bedrock Edition has not received a corresponding preview at this time. Features like the Frostbite mob, Ice Crystals, Icicles, and the Freezing effect are not yet available on Bedrock clients. Cross-platform parity details will likely be announced as the full release approaches.
For Server Owners
A handful of changes are worth noting if you run a public or private server:
- Zombie and Husk transformation: Powder Snow near spawn points or mob farms can now convert them into Frostbites, changing expected drop tables and combat behaviour.
- New brewing recipes: Economy or progression servers built around potions will need to account for Freezing potions and Arrows of Freezing as new craftable items.
- Snowballs now apply knockback to players, which could affect any PvP mini-game that previously treated snowballs as harmless projectiles.
- Other Players screen: Players on dedicated servers can now reach the new moderation tools directly from the pause menu, useful for helping kids report issues without navigating complex menus.
- Debug overlay additions: The new
chunk_section_statusdebug layer may impact performance at high view distances during testing, keep this in mind on resource-constrained hardware.
For Parents
The biggest parenting-relevant news here is the rebuilt social system. The consolidated Player Options screen puts muting, blocking, and reporting all in one place, much easier to walk a child through than hunting across multiple menus. Draft reports are now saved sensibly and no longer lost unexpectedly when leaving a world, so a report your child started won't vanish before it's sent.
On the content side, the Frostbite mob and Freezing effect add a new layer of survival challenge. The mob is a zombie variant, nothing beyond what's already in the base game, but younger or more sensitive players may find the "gradually freezing" experience a little intense on harder difficulty settings. Consider dropping to Easy mode when exploring Ice Caves for the first time together.
For Players
Ready to go spelunking? Here's your quick survival guide for Ice Caves:
- Wear Leather Armor, it reduces damage from the Freezing effect, the same way it protects you from Powder Snow.
- Watch the ceiling. Icicles fall and deal bonus damage. Lighting up an area with torches will actually break them, use that to your advantage.
- Keep your distance from Frostbites, but not too much distance, they'll switch to Ice Ball attacks if you're far away. Medium range with a shield is your friend.
- Brew Freezing potions once you've collected Ice Balls, Arrows of Freezing will be incredibly useful in PvP and for slowing tough mobs.
- Don't stand in Powder Snow near Zombies, they'll transform into Frostbites and become much harder to deal with.
Do SNT Kingdoms Need an Update?
Not yet, and that's completely fine. SNT kingdoms run on Paper 1.21.11 backends behind a Velocity proxy, with ViaVersion/ViaBackwards/ViaRewind handling clients from version 1.13 through 1.21.11. The 26.x version series is not yet supported by PaperMC, Velocity, or the Via ecosystem, meaning 26.4 snapshot clients cannot connect to kingdoms at this stage.
This is a snapshot, pre-release, experimental software, so there's no urgency at all. When the full winter drop eventually releases as a stable version and the supporting tools (Paper, Velocity, Via) have caught up to Mojang's year-based versioning scheme, the SNT team will evaluate the update fully before touching any kingdom. Your six worlds, Survival, SharedLife, RandomLoot, Chaos, Spleef, and Rivals, are all running smoothly on the current stable stack. No action is needed from kingdom owners or players right now.
