Minecraft Java Snapshot 26.3-rc-3: What It Means for Your Kingdom
What Changed
On 14 September 2026, Mojang pushed Minecraft: Java Edition snapshot 26.3-rc-3 to the official version manifest. This is a release candidate, the "rc" label means Mojang considers the build very close to a full public release and is hunting for any last-minute bugs before they stamp it as stable. Because this entry comes from the version manifest rather than a dedicated changelog page, a detailed list of fixes has not yet been published alongside it. Release candidates at this stage typically carry only minor bug squashes or last-second tweaks compared to the previous candidate.
Why It Matters
Release candidates are the final stop before a version goes live to every player on the launcher. That makes 26.3-rc-3 significant for a few reasons:
- Stability signal: Reaching a third release candidate means the 26.3 line has been refined heavily, a full release is likely just days away.
- Ecosystem pressure: Once a version is officially released, server software projects (PaperMC, Velocity, Via, Fabric) ramp up their migration work in earnest, which eventually unlocks new client support across the board.
- Year-based versioning: Mojang's shift to a year.major.minor scheme (26.x) continues to ripple through the modding and server communities, and each RC nudges that ecosystem one step closer to full compatibility.
Java and Bedrock
This release is Java Edition only. Bedrock Edition follows its own release schedule and versioning system, so Bedrock players are unaffected by this particular snapshot. If you play on a phone, console, or Windows 10/11 Bedrock client, nothing changes on your end today. Java players using the official Mojang launcher can opt into the snapshot channel to try 26.3-rc-3, though as always, snapshot builds are not recommended for everyday play.
For Server Owners
If you run your own server infrastructure, here is the honest picture:
- Do not rush to update. Release candidates are pre-release builds. Core server software, PaperMC, Velocity, Fabric, and the Via* compatibility layer, has not yet completed migration to the 26.x version line.
- Watch the project trackers. PaperMC's GitHub, the Velocity Discord, and ViaVersion's issue tracker are the best places to monitor progress toward 26.x support.
- Plugin compatibility is unknown. Until Paper publishes a 26.3-compatible build, you cannot know which of your plugins will break, so holding your current version is the safe call.
- Backups first, always. If you do experiment on a test server, take a full world backup beforehand, release candidates can still contain world-format changes.
For Parents
Your child may come home excited about this new snapshot, and that enthusiasm is great! Here is what you actually need to know:
- Snapshots are optional. The Minecraft launcher keeps the stable version running by default. Your child would have to deliberately switch to the snapshot channel to use 26.3-rc-3, so nothing changes on their game automatically.
- Snapshots can be buggy. Release candidates are more stable than early snapshots, but they are still pre-release software. Worlds created in a snapshot sometimes cannot be opened in older versions.
- Online servers may not be ready. If your child plays on a managed server (like an SNT kingdom), the server may not support the latest snapshot client yet, and that is completely normal and intentional.
For Players
Hey, you! Want to try 26.3-rc-3? Here's the quick rundown:
- Open the Minecraft Launcher, go to Installations, and enable snapshots in the settings.
- Create a brand-new test world, never use your main survival world with a snapshot.
- Expect a full release very soon, since this is the third release candidate. The wait won't be long!
- Keep an eye on SNT's blog, we'll post the moment our kingdoms are ready to welcome 26.x clients.
Do SNT Kingdoms Need an Update?
No action is needed, and none is being taken yet. SNT Gaming kingdoms currently run Paper 1.21.11 backends behind a Velocity proxy, with a Fabric 1.21.4 backend powering the custom SharedLife experience. Crossplay with Bedrock is handled by Geyser + Floodgate, and Java clients from version 1.13 all the way up to 1.21.11 connect seamlessly via ViaVersion, ViaBackwards, and ViaRewind.
The critical detail: Minecraft 26.x clients are not yet supported on SNT kingdoms. PaperMC, Velocity, and the Via family of plugins have not yet completed their migration to Mojang's year-based versioning system. Until those core projects ship stable 26.x-compatible releases, we cannot safely add support without risking stability across all six of your kingdom's worlds, Survival, SharedLife, RandomLoot, Chaos, Spleef, and Rivals.
We are monitoring every project closely. The moment the ecosystem is ready and we have tested everything thoroughly, we will update our kingdoms and announce 26.x client support right here on the blog. Your kingdom keeps running smoothly in the meantime, no disruption, no action required from you.
