Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 RC2 โ Wilderness Bound Drops September 15th
What Changed
Mojang has released Java Edition 26.3 Release Candidate 2, the second and (hopefully) final test build before the Wilderness Bound game drop goes fully live on September 15th, 2026. Release candidates are feature-complete; only critical bugs are still on the table.
This build contains exactly one fix:
- MC-311782 โ Clicking a button that opens a folder in the game's UI would freeze the entire client until the folder actually opened. That freeze is now gone.
If no new critical issues surface between now and Monday, 26.3 RC2 is the build that becomes the official release.
Why It Matters
A release candidate is Mojang's way of saying "we think this is done, help us make sure." The gap between RC1 and RC2 was short, and the single fix is minor. That's a great sign: Wilderness Bound is arriving in a polished state. The folder-freeze bug, while small, was the kind of thing that could catch players off guard right after launch, especially anyone diving into resource-pack or screenshot folders mid-session, so it's good to see it tidied up before the big day.
Java and Bedrock
This release candidate is Java Edition only. Bedrock Edition follows its own update schedule and release cadence, so Bedrock players won't see a corresponding RC in their launcher. Wilderness Bound content may arrive on Bedrock on a different date or through a separate update package, keep an eye on official Minecraft channels for Bedrock-specific news.
For Server Owners
If you run your own Java server, now is a great time to:
- Back up every world before the full 26.3 release lands on the 15th.
- Check whether your server software (Paper, Fabric, Purpur, etc.) has published a 26.3-compatible build, release candidates move fast, but the ecosystem needs a little extra time.
- Hold off on updating production servers until the full release is out and the core plugins and mods you rely on have confirmed compatibility.
- Review any Geyser or crossplay bridge versions, as year-based version numbers (26.x) may require updated mappings before Bedrock clients can connect cleanly.
For Parents
Nothing changes for your child right now. Release candidates are optional test builds aimed at technical players who want to help find bugs. Your child's regular Minecraft launcher will not update automatically to a release candidate, they would have to deliberately switch to a snapshot/RC profile. The finished Wilderness Bound update arrives for everyone on September 15th, and it will install through the normal launcher update process. As always, it's wise to back up any important worlds before a major update lands.
For Players
Wilderness Bound is almost here! If you can't wait and want to try RC2 today, here's how:
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and head to the Installations tab.
- Enable Snapshots to make the RC2 profile appear.
- Create or select that installation, but play it in a separate folder from your real worlds, because test builds can sometimes corrupt saves.
Otherwise, just sit tight, the full release is only days away. ๐
Do SNT Kingdoms Need an Update?
No action needed, and no update is coming just yet. Here's the full picture:
- SNT kingdoms run Paper 1.21.11 backends with a Fabric 1.21.4 world, fronted by a Velocity proxy. Players on client versions 1.13 through 1.21.11 connect seamlessly thanks to ViaVersion, ViaBackwards, and ViaRewind.
- Minecraft 26.x clients are not yet supported on SNT kingdoms. PaperMC, Velocity, and the Via family of plugins have not yet migrated to Mojang's new year-based versioning scheme, so the plumbing that makes multi-version crossplay work isn't ready for 26.3.
- This means that if your child updates their launcher to Java 26.3 on September 15th, they will temporarily need to switch their launcher profile back to 1.21.11 to connect to your SNT kingdom, until the ecosystem catches up.
- SNT Gaming monitors these updates closely. As soon as Paper, Velocity, and Via publish stable 26.x-compatible releases, we will plan a managed migration and notify all kingdom owners in advance.
All six worlds in your kingdom, Survival, SharedLife, RandomLoot, Chaos, Spleef, and Rivals, continue to run normally. No disruption, no surprises. We've got you covered. โ๏ธ
