Minecraft Java 26.4 Snapshot 6: Snow Bricks & Cold Sulfur Cubes Are Here
What Changed
Snapshot 26.4-6 (released 27 October 2026) is a feature-plus-fixes drop centred on two icy additions and a tidy pile of quality-of-life corrections.
Snow Bricks
- Craft them by arranging four Snow Blocks in a 2×2 grid, no Stonecutter shortcut available.
- They come in three variants: Slab, Stair, and Wall, giving builders a full decorative set.
- Only a Shovel will cause them to drop themselves when mined, so keep one in your hotbar.
- They belong to the Fast Sliding Sulfur Cube archetype, which affects how certain mob interactions work near them.
Cold Sulfur Cube Archetype
- A brand-new special archetype for the Sulfur Cube family, unlocked when a Sulfur Cube absorbs a Blue Ice block.
- Shares the slippery movement of the Fast Sliding archetype, but also floats on water.
- As it glides across the surface, it converts the water below it into a disk of Frosted Ice, think Frost Walker enchantment, but on a mob.
- Frosted Ice only forms when the cube is moving from solid ground and there is an air block directly above the water.
Other Notable Changes
- JVM heap size is now set automatically, up to 25 % of your system RAM, capped at 4 GB.
- Packed Ice Brick variants now require a Pickaxe to drop themselves.
- Brittle Ice can no longer be cracked by a Stray standing on it.
- Ice Crystal blocks now emit ambient sounds when Packed Ice sits directly beneath them.
- Mobs falling through lava may take slightly reduced fall damage in certain edge cases.
- Data Pack version bumped to 125.1; Resource Pack version to 101.0.
Why It Matters
Snow Bricks might look like a small addition, but a complete Slab/Stair/Wall family opens up serious architectural possibilities, think snowy castles, icy dungeon corridors, or frosty rooftops that finally have crisp, clean edges. The Cold Sulfur Cube is more than a curiosity: it introduces a mob that actively reshapes the terrain around it, which adds dynamic tension to any overworld adventure.
The automatic JVM heap sizing is quietly one of the most player-friendly changes in this snapshot. Players who previously struggled with sluggish performance on lower-end machines may notice a smoother experience without touching a single setting.
Java and Bedrock
This is a Java Edition snapshot only. Bedrock Edition is on its own separate release track and has not received these features. Bedrock players on SNT kingdoms connect through Geyser and will not see Snow Bricks or the Cold Sulfur Cube until those features reach a full release and the supporting server software catches up.
For Server Owners
If you run your own Java server, a couple of things deserve attention:
- Data Pack authors must update their pack format to 125.1 and Resource Packs to 101.0 to remain compatible with this snapshot.
- The new
domain_warpdensity function is powerful but comes with an explicit performance warning from Mojang, use it sparingly in world-generation data packs. - The new
corner_constraintfield for Structure Pool Elements gives custom-structure builders fine-grained control over where pieces can be placed based on terrain density, a welcome tool for anyone building modular structures. - The automatic JVM heap change is good news for self-hosted servers too: less manual tuning means fewer misconfigured launch scripts.
For Parents
Nothing in this snapshot changes how children interact with the game in terms of safety or online behaviour. The bug fixes do include corrections to some confusing in-game text around reporting and moderation menus, things like inconsistent button labels and a missing word in a multiplayer message, which makes those important safety tools a little clearer and easier to use. A couple of crash fixes are also included, so the game should feel more stable overall.
For Players
Two words: Snow Bricks. If you have been waiting for a way to make your winter builds look extra polished, this is your moment. Grab some Snow Blocks, pop them in a 2×2 on your crafting table, and start experimenting with the Slab and Stair variants for roofs and battlements.
The Cold Sulfur Cube is also worth seeking out, track one down near Blue Ice and watch it skim across water, leaving a trail of Frosted Ice in its wake. Just mind your step: Frosted Ice is slippery!
On the bug-fix front, the inventory crash when spectating a mob and the early block-break glitch are both squashed, so gameplay should feel a lot smoother.
Do SNT Kingdoms Need an Update?
No action needed, and SNT kingdoms cannot run 26.x clients yet. SNT Gaming kingdoms run on Paper 1.21.11 backends behind a Velocity proxy, with ViaVersion/ViaBackwards/ViaRewind handling clients from version 1.13 all the way up to 1.21.11. Because PaperMC, Velocity, and the Via suite have not yet migrated to Mojang's year-based versioning system, Minecraft 26.x clients are not currently supported.
This means Snow Bricks, the Cold Sulfur Cube, and every other 26.4 feature remain out of reach on SNT kingdoms for now. The SNT team monitors upstream projects closely, and kingdoms will be updated, safely and fully managed, as always, as soon as the wider ecosystem is ready. You don't need to do a thing; we'll handle it.
