Minecraft Java Snapshot 26.3-4: What It Means for Your Kingdom
What Changed
On 16 July 2026, Mojang released Minecraft: Java Edition snapshot 26.3-4, the fourth snapshot in the 26.3 development cycle. This build arrived via the official version manifest, and at the time of writing Mojang has not yet published a dedicated changelog article alongside it.
That's not unusual. Snapshot manifests often land a little ahead of the human-readable patch notes. What we know for certain is that this is a pre-release, experimental build, not a full release, sitting inside Mojang's new year-based versioning scheme (26.x means 2026, third major update cycle, fourth snapshot).
Why It Matters
Snapshots are Mojang's way of sharing work-in-progress code with the community. They let dedicated players and mod/plugin developers peek at what's coming before it's finalised. However, that early access comes with real trade-offs:
- Bugs are expected. Snapshots are testing grounds, not polished products.
- The wider ecosystem lags behind. Server software, proxies, and compatibility layers need time to catch up after each snapshot, and even longer after a full release.
- No changelog yet means we can't pinpoint specific block, mob, or mechanic changes, but we'll update this post the moment Mojang publishes one.
For most players, the most important thing to understand is simple: snapshot ≠ update your server today.
Java and Bedrock
Snapshot 26.3-4 is a Java Edition-only release. Bedrock Edition follows its own separate preview and release track, so Bedrock players won't see this snapshot in their launcher or on their devices. If your household mixes Java and Bedrock players, nothing changes on the Bedrock side right now.
Mojang's year-based version numbering (26.x) is also new territory for the whole Java ecosystem. Plugin platforms, proxy software, and crossplay bridges are all still working through what that shift means in practice.
For Server Owners
If you run your own server, resist any temptation to install a snapshot on a live, player-facing world. Key points to keep in mind:
- Snapshot builds are not supported by PaperMC, Velocity, or the Via family of compatibility plugins at this stage.
- Running a snapshot server would immediately break crossplay for any Bedrock players using Geyser/Floodgate.
- World data written by a snapshot can sometimes be incompatible with older builds, risking corruption if you roll back.
- Keep snapshots on a completely separate, disposable test instance, never on your main world.
For Parents
Your child may come home excited about a "new Minecraft update", and that enthusiasm is great! Here's a calm translation: this is a developer preview, a bit like a rough draft of a book chapter. It exists so testers and modders can find problems before the finished version ships to everyone.
There's no need to do anything right now. Your child's favourite server (including any SNT kingdom they play on) will not be running this snapshot, and that's actually a good thing, it means their worlds, progress, and friends list are all safe and stable.
For Players
Want to try snapshot 26.3-4 yourself? Here's how to do it safely:
- Open the Minecraft Launcher, go to Installations, and tick Snapshots to make it appear.
- Create a brand-new world just for testing, never open a world you care about in a snapshot.
- Jot down anything weird or exciting you find; Mojang genuinely reads bug reports on their feedback site!
- Remember: you cannot connect to your SNT kingdom using a 26.x snapshot client yet, switch back to your normal 1.21.x profile to jump in with your friends.
Do SNT Kingdoms Need an Update?
No action needed, and none planned yet. SNT Gaming kingdoms run Paper 1.21.11 backends behind a Velocity proxy, with a Fabric 1.21.4 backend powering the SharedLife world. Crossplay is handled by Geyser + Floodgate, and client compatibility stretches all the way from version 1.13 up to 1.21.11 thanks to ViaVersion, ViaBackwards, and ViaRewind.
The critical detail: MC 26.x clients are not yet supported on SNT kingdoms. PaperMC, Velocity, and the Via suite have not yet migrated to Mojang's new year-based versioning, so there is no safe or stable path to 26.x support right now. The moment those projects ship verified, production-ready builds for 26.x, our team will evaluate an upgrade, as always, with zero disruption to your kingdom's six worlds or your players' progress.
In the meantime, all six game worlds, Survival, SharedLife, RandomLoot, Chaos, Spleef, and Rivals, continue running smoothly. There is nothing you need to change, download, or worry about.
