Minecraft Java Snapshot 26.2-rc-1 Is Out, Here's What It Means
What Changed
On 11 June 2026, Mojang published Minecraft: Java Edition 26.2-rc-1, the first release candidate for the 26.2 update cycle. A release candidate (RC) sits right at the end of the testing pipeline: it is feature-complete, the team believes it is stable enough to ship, and it is being given one final round of community testing before it becomes an official full release.
Mojang has not attached a public changelog to this particular version manifest entry, which is common for release candidates that carry only last-minute bug fixes and polish rather than headline new features. In practice, 26.2-rc-1 consolidates everything tested across the preceding 26.2 snapshot series into a single, nearly-final build.
Why It Matters
Release candidates matter for a few key reasons:
- A full release is close. RC builds typically become the official release within days or a couple of weeks, meaning 26.2 proper is just around the corner.
- The year-based versioning scheme continues. Mojang moved away from the classic 1.x numbering with the 26.x series, and each new RC is another step toward that format becoming the everyday standard players see in their launchers.
- Plugin and mod authors are on the clock. Server software maintainers, PaperMC, Velocity, the Via family, watch RC builds closely so they can finalise their own compatibility work before the public release lands.
Java and Bedrock
This release is Java Edition only. Bedrock Edition follows its own separate release cadence and versioning system, so Bedrock players and server operators are not affected by this snapshot. Cross-play between Java and Bedrock continues to depend on bridge tools like Geyser, which also need time to catch up whenever a new Java version ships.
For Server Owners
If you run your own Minecraft infrastructure, keep a close eye on the PaperMC, Velocity, and ViaVersion project boards over the coming days. Once 26.2 goes fully live, those projects will begin, or finalise, their migration work. Until official stable builds are available for the full stack, do not rush to update production servers. Running an RC on a live server used by real players is risky; wait for the ecosystem to catch up.
For Parents
Your child may come home excited that a new Minecraft version just dropped and ask why they can't use it on their server yet. The short answer is: patience pays off. Jumping onto a brand-new version before the server software is ready can cause worlds to break, mods to stop working, or the server to crash. Sticking with a tested, stable version keeps everyone's hard work, and all those carefully built houses, safe.
For Players
Seeing a shiny new version in the launcher is exciting! You can download and try 26.2-rc-1 in single-player to get a feel for any new features or tweaks. Just remember to launch it as a separate installation so it doesn't overwrite your usual profile. When your server is ready to upgrade, you'll be first in line knowing exactly what to expect.
Do SNT Kingdoms Need an Update?
No action is needed right now, and SNT kingdoms remain fully playable today. Here's the honest picture:
- SNT kingdoms run Paper 1.21.11 backends with a Fabric 1.21.4 node for the SharedLife world, all sitting behind a Velocity proxy.
- Players can connect using any Minecraft client from version 1.13 all the way up to 1.21.11 thanks to ViaVersion, ViaBackwards, and ViaRewind.
- MC 26.x clients, including 26.2-rc-1, are not yet supported for kingdom connections. PaperMC, Velocity, and the Via suite have not yet completed their migration to Mojang's new year-based versioning, so the compatibility bridge simply doesn't exist yet.
- Bedrock players continue to join seamlessly via Geyser + Floodgate as normal, this Java snapshot does not affect that pathway.
SNT Gaming monitors every major upstream project continuously. The moment stable, production-ready builds of the full stack land, we will schedule kingdom updates and let owners know in advance. Your six worlds, Survival, SharedLife, RandomLoot, Chaos, Spleef, and Rivals, will keep running without interruption throughout this process.
