Minecraft Java 26.2 Pre-Release 6: Hardcore Spectator Fix
What Changed
Minecraft Java Edition 26.2 Pre-Release 6, published on 10 June 2026, is a tightly focused pre-release with exactly one change:
- When a player dies in a Hardcore world and respawns as a spectator, the game no longer switches the
spectators_generate_chunksgame rule off by mistake.
That's it, one bug, one fix, clean and simple. Pre-releases like this one are a sign that the development team is putting the final polish on the 26.2 release before it leaves testing.
Why It Matters
Hardcore mode is one of Minecraft's most dramatic experiences: one life, permanent death, except that dying doesn't actually kick you out of your world. Instead you become a spectator, free to fly around and watch your surviving friends carry on. That spectator phase should feel seamless.
The old bug quietly disabled spectators_generate_chunks the moment you died. That game rule controls whether a spectator's movement can load new chunks. With it turned off, a freshly dead player flying across the map would hit invisible walls of unloaded terrain, making the whole spectator experience choppy and frustrating. The fix restores the rule to whatever the server operator originally set, so spectators can roam freely, just as intended.
Java and Bedrock
This release is Java Edition only. Bedrock Edition has its own release schedule and is not affected by Java pre-releases. If your household mixes Java and Bedrock players, nothing changes on the Bedrock side today.
As always, pre-releases are testing builds, not the finished article. Mojang strongly recommends backing up any worlds before loading them in a pre-release, and keeping test worlds separate from the ones you actually care about.
For Server Owners
If you run a Hardcore-style server or mini-game where players become spectators on death, this fix is directly relevant to your players' experience once 26.2 reaches a full release. Until then:
- Do not deploy pre-release jars in production. They are unsupported by the major server software ecosystems and can cause world corruption or plugin incompatibility.
- Keep an eye on PaperMC, Velocity, and ViaVersion changelogs, they are the gatekeepers that determine when a Mojang version is safe to run at scale.
- If you currently set
spectators_generate_chunkstofalseas a deliberate performance measure, double-check its value after you eventually upgrade to 26.2 to confirm it wasn't silently toggled by an earlier bug.
For Parents
Nothing about this update changes what your child will experience on their current Minecraft setup. Pre-releases are optional test builds aimed at players who want to help find bugs, they are not automatic updates and won't appear unless someone deliberately enables "Snapshots" in the Minecraft Launcher settings. Your child's worlds and progress are safe.
The change itself is a positive quality-of-life improvement: kids who play Hardcore with friends will eventually benefit from a smoother, less confusing spectator experience after they die in-game.
For Players
Ever played Hardcore, met a creeper you probably shouldn't have, and then found yourself as a ghost who couldn't fly anywhere without the world going all grey and unloaded? That was this bug. It's now fixed.
Once 26.2 goes fully live, dying in Hardcore will still sting, but at least you'll be able to watch your friends in style, gliding through every loaded corner of the world without the game quietly sabotaging your spectator flight. Consider it a small consolation prize for that ill-timed lava bath.
Do SNT Kingdoms Need an Update?
No action needed, and no update is possible yet. Here's the full picture:
- SNT kingdoms run Paper 1.21.11 backends behind a Velocity proxy, with ViaVersion / ViaBackwards / ViaRewind handling client compatibility from version 1.13 all the way up to 1.21.11.
- Mojang's year-based versioning (26.x) is not yet supported by PaperMC, Velocity, or the Via suite. Until those projects ship compatible builds, 26.x clients, including anyone running 26.2 Pre-Release 6, cannot connect to SNT kingdoms.
- The Hardcore spectator fix is a great improvement, but it lives entirely inside the Java server/client layer and has no bearing on SNT's current stack.
- When PaperMC and the wider ecosystem fully support 26.2, SNT will evaluate an upgrade. Until that day, your kingdom is running stable, fully managed software, and that's exactly how we like it.
As always, SNT handles every update decision for you. You don't need to touch a thing.
