Minecraft Java 26.3 Snapshot 7: Concrete Stairs, Explorer Maps & More
What Changed
Java Edition 26.3 Snapshot 7 is described by Mojang as the final features snapshot for the 26.3 cycle, meaning everything that's going into the release is now on the table. Here's the rundown:
- Concrete Stairs & Slabs arrive in all 16 concrete colors, complete with their own block and item tags (
#concrete_stairs,#concrete_slabs). - Explorer Maps are now unique items, each destination (Ancient City, Trial Chambers, Jungle Pyramid, Abandoned Campsite, and many more) has its own icon and item type instead of being a renamed Filled Map.
- Abandoned Camps can now contain maps pointing to other Abandoned Camps across nine biomes (Bamboo Jungle, Cherry Grove, Birch Forest, Dappled Forest, Flower Forest, Pale Garden, Swamp, and Windswept Forest), plus maps to major structures like the Ancient City and Woodland Mansion.
- Loot table tweaks: Firework Rockets in Abandoned Camp chests are swapped out for Gunpowder, and the barrel loot has been refreshed too.
- The player icon on all maps now always shows which direction you're actually facing, a small but meaningful navigation upgrade.
- Explorer Maps can no longer be zoomed out at a Crafting Table or Cartography Table; only maps in the new
#extendable_mapstag can be expanded. - Cushions no longer suppress vibrations when placed, broken, or interacted with.
- Under the hood: Data Pack version bumped to 115.0, Resource Pack version to 95.0, density functions now use single-precision floating point, and the
/swingcommand gains new animation options (whackorstab) plus a configurable duration.
Why It Matters
Concrete has been a builder's best friend for years, but the absence of Stairs and Slabs always forced workarounds. Getting those shapes in all 16 colors is a genuine quality-of-life win for anyone who cares about clean builds. Meanwhile, making Explorer Maps distinct items with individual icons makes them far easier to organise in your inventory and chest storage, no more squinting at renamed Filled Maps trying to remember which is which. The new directional player icon is a small change that removes a real frustration on long expeditions.
Java and Bedrock
This snapshot is Java Edition only. Bedrock Edition has its own separate release cadence and is not affected by 26.3 snapshots. If your household mixes Java and Bedrock players, keep an eye on Bedrock Preview releases for any parallel feature announcements.
For Server Owners
If you run a custom server, a few technical changes deserve your attention:
- Data Pack version 115.0, update your
pack.mcmetabefore testing any existing packs in this snapshot. - Block State field renames:
Name→idandProperties→properties. Any data pack or tool that reads raw block state JSON will need updating. - Explorer Map loot function change:
minecraft:exploration_mapno longer converts item types. Packs that generated exploration maps must switch their base item fromminecraft:maptominecraft:filled_map(or a specific explorer map item). If no matching structure is found, the item is left without map data, useminecraft:filteredwithminecraft:discard_itemto handle that gracefully. - Density function precision change: world-generation math now uses single-precision floats throughout. Mojang acknowledges this may break niche data pack terrain configurations and is actively gathering feedback.
- Swing animation components:
minecraft:swing_animationis removed; replace it withminecraft:attack_animationand/orminecraft:interact_animation. minecraft:map_colordata component and tint source are removed entirely, existing maps are auto-migrated on load.
For Parents
If your child is excited about this snapshot, the headline features are easy to understand: more building block shapes in bright colors, and better treasure maps that are clearer and easier to use. The Abandoned Camp now rewards exploration with maps that send young adventurers off on chain quests across beautiful biomes, which is a lovely, self-directed way to experience the world. No concerning content changes in this update; it's all creative and exploratory by nature.
For Players
Here's the fun part:
- Build smoother with Concrete! Stairs and Slabs mean you can finally make curved, stepped, or detailed builds in all your favourite concrete colors without switching materials.
- Go treasure-hunting in a chain! Find an Abandoned Camp, loot the maps inside, and they'll point you to other Abandoned Camps and big structures like Ancient Cities and Trial Chambers. One discovery leads to another.
- Your map arrow now spins with you, look at the map and you'll always know exactly which way you're walking. No more getting turned around!
- Each Explorer Map now has its own unique look in your inventory, so finding a Jungle Pyramid Map actually feels special.
Do SNT Kingdoms Need an Update?
No action needed, and SNT kingdoms are not affected by this snapshot at all. Our kingdoms run on Paper 1.21.11 backends behind a Velocity proxy, with ViaVersion / ViaBackwards / ViaRewind handling client compatibility for versions 1.13 through 1.21.11. Minecraft's new year-based versioning (26.x) is not yet supported by PaperMC, Velocity, or the Via suite, so 26.3 Snapshot 7 clients cannot connect to SNT kingdoms at this time, and that's perfectly fine for a pre-release snapshot.
All six worlds in your kingdom (Survival, SharedLife, RandomLoot, Chaos, Spleef, and Rivals) continue running smoothly on the stable 1.21.11 stack. When 26.3 reaches a full release and the server ecosystem catches up, we'll handle the upgrade for you automatically, that's the whole point of a fully managed kingdom. You just play.
